"It breaks my heart to think about these kids going hungry,"
"Our families that are working hard, they shouldn't have to pay the price of what's going on with our government right now."
"I know it's a tough time, but people are coming in and really need some help,"
Multiple Bay Area restaurants are providing free meals to children whose federal food stamps were cut. Tony & Alba's Pizza and Pasta served meals to 150 children; Monster Pho in Oakland distributed at least 130 to-go bags of soup; and Al Pastor Papi in San Francisco handed out so many free burritos that the owner struggled to keep up. Paying customers purchased extra large orders, donated groceries, and handed over cash to support the relief efforts. Donations enabled Tony & Alba's owners to share supplies with other restaurateurs, discount meals for parents, and challenge other local eateries to accept SNAP cards for free children's meals.
