"The historic space that formerly held the Italian restaurant Artu now houses 12 tiger-print bar stools and 30 lounge seats, primarily in the form of lush velvet-covered banquets and cozy swivel armchairs. The quirky layout of the old brownstone translates to a moody cocktail bar, full of nooks and crannies for romantic date nights and semi-private conversations, designed by Assembly Design Studio."
""Beacon Hill has always been a place where history meets charm, and we wanted to create a space that reflects that spirit," says owner Gennaro Riccio in a statement. Riccio has also been involved in the openings of Cafe Amaro, the historic Caffe Vittoria, and the old-world Florentine Cafe in the North End. "Our goal was to build an intimate bar, with a heavy emphasis on the art of cocktail making, that feels like it's been a fabric of the neighborhood forever.""
89 Charles opened on September 20 at 89 Charles Street in Beacon Hill as a subterranean, Art Deco–inflected cocktail bar. The venue occupies the former Artu space and features 12 tiger-print bar stools and about 30 lounge seats, including velvet-covered banquettes and swivel armchairs. The layout emphasizes moody nooks and semi-private seating while Assembly Design Studio handled the interiors. Chef Matt McPherson offers small indulgences such as kaluga caviar on schmaltz latkes, foie gras bratwurst, and a French dip, with dishes priced $14 to $22. Bar manager Dave Irwin crafts playful spins on classics, including beef tallow–washed whiskey and coconut-rum espresso variations.
