A Revered Leimert Park Cafe Returns as a Dynamic Day-to-Night Destination
"When Harun Coffee reopened on Friday, January 9, after closing in 2023, it marked the return of a Leimert Park institution. The newest Harun iteration transforms the South Los Angeles cafe into a community hangout that operates as a daytime coffee destination and a nighttime lounge in a vibrant section of Leimert Park. Harun opened in 2019 and closed its doors in 2023 due to operational challenges during a difficult time for Los Angeles businesses amid the pandemic."
"Community Labs invests in small BIPOC-owned businesses, with particular attention to local Los Angeles brands. With Harun, the firm saw an opportunity for a reemergence of a pillar in Leimert Park. One week in, Harun's all-day presence has already attracted lines of locals on the central stretch of Degnan Boulevard adjacent to Leimert Park Plaza. Johnson sources coffee beans from across Africa, originating from farms in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Togo."
Harun Coffee reopened on January 9 as a Leimert Park institution operating as a daytime coffee destination and a nighttime lounge. Harun originally opened in 2019 and closed in 2023 because of operational challenges and pandemic-era business conditions that reduced foot traffic. Owner Chase Johnson partnered with Prophet Walker and Cheron Hall of Community Labs to relaunch the cafe. Community Labs targets small BIPOC-owned Los Angeles brands and supported Harun's return. The reopened cafe sources beans from Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Togo and offers traditional and inventive drinks like a coconut cappuccino. Alta chef Keith Corbin developed the opening food menu. Opening week drew lines on Degnan Boulevard.
