You've Never Seen Saoirse Ronan Quite Like This Before
"In her first interview for the film, Ronan wasn't putting it on: There really isn't much like "Bad Apples," and that's a compliment. Consider two things: the film's short synopsis ("A primary school teacher [is] forced to take drastic action because of a foul-mouthed, violent student"), which doesn't sound exactly funny, and one of the main inspirations for Etzler casting the four-time Oscar nominee in a film that is, indeed, very funny."
""Actually, that was what I was doing as well," Etzler told IndieWire. "I, of course, watched all the great films that she's done, but then I saw this 'SNL' skit where she was a flight attendant. I just saw Maria there, because she's this person of authority, but she's also really funny doing this character. That 'SNL' skit was part of the reason why she was my top choice. I'm really happy that people are going to see her great comedic talent.""
Jonatan Etzler's English-language debut Bad Apples is a pitch-black comedy adapted from Rasmus Andersson's 2020 novel De Oönskade. Saoirse Ronan plays Maria, a beleaguered primary school teacher forced into drastic action by a foul-mouthed, violent student. The film blends tough-talking real-world problems with a zippy sense of the absurd and emphasizes Ronan's underutilized comedic chops. Casting drew in part from Ronan's 2017 Saturday Night Live flight-attendant skit that showcased an authoritative yet funny persona. Eddie Waller makes his debut as Danny, the disruptive child who upends Maria's life and drives the film's dark humor.
