Will Sinners or OBAA Reign Supreme in the MFL?
"The former Screen Actors Guild Awards are SAGging no more, but whatever we're now calling them, they aired on Netflix on Sunday night and were not afraid to get freaky with the Oscar race. Sinners took the Best Cast prize (+50 MFL points), and in a pretty significant upset, Michael B. Jordan took Best Actor in a Leading Role (+35 points) over the favored Timothée Chalamet from Marty Supreme."
"Jessie Buckley continues to steamroll the Best Actress field for Hamnet (she's singlehandedly pushed the Shakespearian weepie into third place overall in the last few weeks), and Sean Penn is suddenly looking like the most likely One Battle After Another cast member to win an Oscar after following his BAFTA win with another victory here."
"Ahead of the ceremony, pundits thought Sinners might stand a chance of winning this award, as the producers are historically more apt to award bigger moneymakers. Sinners's $369 million global take was certainly impressive, but so was One Battle After Another's $210 mil. Just as most precursors have done, the PGA gave PTA and his fellow producers Adam Somner and Sara Murphy their Best Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures Award."
Week 23 of Vulture's Movies Fantasy League covered two major award ceremonies. The Actor Awards, formerly the Screen Actors Guild Awards, aired on Netflix and produced several surprises in the Oscar race. Sinners won Best Cast, and Michael B. Jordan upset Timothée Chalamet for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Jessie Buckley maintains her commanding lead in Best Actress for Hamnet, while Sean Penn strengthened his Oscar prospects with a win for One Battle After Another. The Producers Guild of America awarded its Best Producer prize to One Battle After Another's producers, despite Sinners' larger box office performance of $369 million globally.
