Christopher Landon exited Scream 7 about a week after Melissa Barrera’s firing. Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega had been introduced as new leads in the 2022 reboot and its sequel Scream VI. Barrera’s firing reportedly followed her support for Palestine amid the Israel/Hamas conflict. Ortega left the project shortly afterward during pre-production. The planned Scream 7 script centered on Barrera’s character, and when that storyline was removed the project no longer aligned with Landon’s commitment, prompting his departure. Intense social media backlash portrayed Landon as a villain and made the loss of the job painful.
"I made my decision to walk away about a week after [Spyglasss] fired her," he said. "There was no movie anymore. The whole script was about her. I didn't sign on to make 'a Scream movie.' I signed on to make that movie. When that movie no longer existed, I moved on."
