Who Makes a Horror Movie About Cancer in Their Real Home? Meet the Radical 'Mother of Flies' Family
"We're a very open family."
"You can talk about unorthodox subjects, disguise it in blood, and it's great. The horror community is very open-minded and very open-hearted with art."
"I was lucky enough to be born into this family. My sister and I were raised by two wonderful creatives."
"After four drama films, we made a horror movie and fell in love with it."
Mother of Flies streams on Shudder Friday, January 23. The lo-fi, ethereal folk-allegory horror is written and directed by Toby Poser, Zelda Adams, and John Adams, a Catskills-based family filmmaking unit. The film draws on actual experiences with cancer to create an intimate, existential mood and to probe necromancy's brutal questions. The Adams family integrates music and lo-fi aesthetics into the filmmaking process and developed their craft from childhood projects through drama films into genre work. Fantasia Fest awarded the film the 2025 Cheval Noir for Best Film, garnering significant genre recognition.
