JT Mollner avoided public discussions of Strange Darling because of frequent misinterpretations and personal exhaustion. Strange Darling premiered at Fantastic Fest 2023 and later generated controversy after wide release for a venomous antagonist who implies a false rape allegation. Mollner cited a disillusioning 2018 Q&A experience that led him to stop dissecting his own work in public. Mollner has credits including Angels and Outlaws and worked with cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi on Strange Darling. Mollner later participated in a Lionsgate Zoom for The Long Walk and intentionally supported director Francis Lawrence's vision.
