Anthony Perkins achieved iconic status for his portrayal of Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film Psycho, delivering several unforgettable lines and scenes that inspired sequels, homages, and remakes. He was a popular leading man from the 1950s through the 1970s and later worked largely in television while remaining active until near his death. He was born in New York City and was the son of actor Osgood Perkins, who died when Anthony was five. He died in 1992 from AIDS complications and spoke about the disease as a lesson in love, understanding, and compassion.
