In the latest Superman film directed by James Gunn, Superman faces a severe identity crisis when he uncovers the truth about his birth parents. Jor-El and Lara, typically seen as noble figures, are revealed to have a much darker intention. The film depicts Superman initially comforted by a holographic recording from them, urging him to embody a protective role on Earth. However, when Lex Luthor steals the recording and decrypts it, Superman learns that his parents are actually alien conquerors who wish for him to dominate Earth rather than safeguard its inhabitants.
Superman suffers a crisis of identity when he discovers the message from his birth parents isn't what he thought it was.
The recording urges Superman to make a home on Earth and become an aspirational figure to its residents - something which Superman takes to heart.
Lex Luthor breaks into Superman's Fortress of Solitude and steals the recording, and with the help of The Engineer, decrypts the final part of the message.
That part of the recording from Jor-El and Lara reveals that they're actually horrible alien conquerors, and they want Kal-El to rule the Earth, not protect it.
