He earned 16 BAFTA nominations with three wins. Born in Norwich in 1942, he studied film design at the Royal College of Art and worked in art departments through the 1960s and 1970s on films such as Casino Royale, Scrooge and Royal Flash. He established himself as an art director on A Bridge Too Far and Superman and achieved a breakthrough as production designer on The Elephant Man.
