Sean Penn thanks Ukrainian Railways CEO for custom Oscar after skipping ceremony
"You're missing the Oscars, and plus you gave the last one to the president. So we made this one. This is made from the railcar that was damaged by the Russians. The metal survived, so we put some words here. It's very special for us. It's not golden but it's very real and from the bottom of our hearts."
"Sean Penn opted for the trip to [Ukraine] vs. Oscar ceremony at Dolby Theater where he was awarded his 3rd [trophy]. We couldn't leave our great friend and loyal Ukrainian Railways passenger without an award. So, I have presented Sean with our Iron Oscar on behalf of all of us!"
Sean Penn, 65, became the fourth male actor to win three Oscars at the 2026 Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in Paul Thomas Anderson's film. Rather than attending the ceremony, Penn chose to visit war-torn Ukraine, where he has been a longtime activist and close ally of President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukrainian Railways CEO Oleksandr Pertsovskyi presented Penn with a custom Oscar statuette crafted from salvaged metal of a railcar destroyed by Russian forces. This gesture honored Penn's commitment to Ukraine and referenced his earlier gift of one of his Oscar trophies to Zelensky during a post-2022 invasion visit.
