""I loved constructing sentences and fitting words together," said Okudera. "I applied to competitions as a student, and after applying to several, I won one, which gave me my start in my career.""
""To the future!" she said."
Satoko Okudera began writing as a student and launched her career after winning a writing competition. She won the Japan Academy Prize for Best Screenplay in 1995 for Haunted School. Okudera collaborated with animator Mamoru Hosoda on The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006), Summer Wars (2009), and Wolf Children (2012). Her collaborations with Hosoda have received new 4K remasters, and Moving is now streaming internationally on MUBI. Okudera's latest script, Kokuho, directed by Lee Sang-il, became the #2 highest-grossing Japanese live-action film domestically and is Japan's entry for the 2026 Best International Feature Oscar.
