Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' makes hometown Oakland proud with record-breaking Oscar nominations
"Sixteen nominations is the most ever for any film ever in the history of Academy,"
"So it is a record. So, of course it's got to be thrilling for Ryan, for the whole film community here in Oakland."
"He was at St. Mary's to play football. He had a football scholarship. He was a very skilled athlete. And I sort of said, 'What are you planning to study? He was thinking about a chemistry major at the time. And I said, 'Well, I think you should go to Hollywood and write screenplays.'"
Ryan Coogler's film Sinners earned a record 16 Oscar nominations, including Best Director for Coogler. Allen Michaan, owner of the Grand Lake Theatre, called the nominations a record and said the achievement is thrilling for Coogler and the Oakland film community. Grand Lake Theatre hosted a private screening last April and will screen the film again digitally starting Friday, followed by a 70 mm projection next week. Rosemary Graham, Coogler's former professor at Saint Mary's College, recalled his football scholarship, athletic skill, and early writing talent, and said she encouraged him to leave chemistry and write screenplays. Graham attended a gala with Coogler and his wife, producer Zinzi.
