"The quantity of movies that are made today, literally globally-millions. Not thousands, millions,"
"And most of it is shit."
"And so what I do-it's a horrible thing-but I've started watching my own movies, and actually they're pretty good! And also, they don't age."
"I watched Black Hawk [ Down] the other night and I thought, 'How in the hell did I manage to do that?' But I think occasionally a good one will happen, [and] it's like a relief that there's somebody out there who's doing a good movie."
Ridley Scott criticizes the current volume and quality of global film production, calling the output overwhelmingly mediocre and often saved by post-production visual effects rather than strong scripts. He reports revisiting his own films and finding them consistently good and resilient to aging. He singled out Black Hawk Down as an example of work that still impresses and described modern filmmaking excesses such as Gladiator II's green-screen sea battle with massive sharks. He noted that occasional standout films offer relief amid widespread mediocrity. He is preparing a post-apocalyptic sci-fi titled The Dog Stars following 2023's Napoleon.
