Rick Moranis, 72, is returning from retirement to reprise Lord Dark Helmet in Spaceballs 2. Production has begun and the film is scheduled for theatrical release in 2027. The cast includes returning original members Bill Pullman, Mel Brooks, Daphne Zuniga and George Wyner alongside new additions Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman and Anthony Carrigan. Josh Greenbaum will direct, with Gad collaborating on a script by Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Plot details are being kept secret. Moranis rose to stardom in the 1980s with Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, Spaceballs and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. He left Hollywood in the 1990s to raise his children after his wife died in 1991 and stopped making movies around 1996–1997 because single parenting and travel made continuing his career impractical.
