Queer Oscar winner forced to try and stop speech being cut: 'So disrespectful'
"Thank you so much to the Academy for this insane award. Growing up, people made fun of me liking K-pop but now everyone is singing our song and all the Korean lyrics. I'm so proud. I realise this award is not about success, it's about resilience."
"KPop Demon Hunters took home the Best Animated Feature accolade. It's the first time either accolade has been won by someone of Korean descent in the Oscars' 98-year history."
KPop Demon Hunters achieved historic Oscars success by winning both Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for "Golden," performed by fictional K-pop group Huntrix. This marks the first time either award has been won by someone of Korean descent in the Academy's 98-year history. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans accepted the animated feature award smoothly. However, the Best Original Song acceptance became controversial when ceremony organizers cut off the songwriting team's speeches. EJAE, one of the performers, delivered an emotional thank you speech about overcoming prejudice against K-pop. Producer Lee Yuhan began his speech but was interrupted by ceremony music, while songwriter Mark Sonnenblick visibly protested by jumping and waving his hands, attempting to continue speaking.
