Perfect Dark Star Reacts To The Game's Cancellation
"I just felt so relieved that I still had Lara, but I also felt really frightened about losing Lara. I'm still frightened of losing Lara,"
"I was as shocked, surprised, and devastated as everyone else was when the funding was pulled, and the studio was closed. I did not see it coming. I was absolutely blindsided when the project was defunded."
"To my knowledge, we were pretty far along. I'd done entire chapters of this universe."
"That was the day I was really sad because that was the day I lost hope,"
Alix Wilton-Regan filmed Joanna Dark scenes for Perfect Dark while also portraying Lara Croft for upcoming Tomb Raider games. Perfect Dark was defunded and developer The Initiative closed after Microsoft pulled funding in July 2025. Significant performance work continued through 2025, and Wilton-Regan completed entire chapters for the Perfect Dark project. Potential interest from Take-Two to acquire the project failed to produce a deal. Wilton-Regan described relief at retaining the Lara Croft role but expressed ongoing fear that Tomb Raider could suffer a similar cancellation and that she had been blindsided by the defunding.
