Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley light up the night at Irish premiere of 'Hamnet'

"The film, which reimagines the life of William Shakespeare and his family, will be released in Irish cinemas on January 9. It follows William Shakespeare portrayed by Mescal, his wife Agnes, played by Buckley, and the untimely death of their only son, Hamnet, during the bubonic plague in 1596. Buckley portrays a grieving mother in the aftermath of her son's death, while her husband retreats into his work, writing what would go on to be called Hamlet in the years following the death."

""When I was filming Hamnet, I deeply wanted to become a mother," Buckley told The New York Times in recent days. "And it was such a gift to move through this woman and her motherhood and her love and her loss before I became a mother myself.""

Hamnet reimagines William Shakespeare and his family, centering on the 1596 death of their son Hamnet from the bubonic plague. Mescal portrays William Shakespeare and Buckley plays his wife, Agnes. Buckley's character grieves while her husband withdraws into his work, composing what would later be known as Hamlet. Buckley welcomed her first child after filming and found the role resonant with impending motherhood. The film has earned just over $4 million in the US since its late-November release and received six Golden Globe nominations, positioning it as a Best Picture contender.
