A couple from Brooklyn, Maddie and Tyler, leave their hectic New York routines for a long road trip in a van. After encountering a gruesome roadside crash, Tyler insists it is only an accident. Soon, scratches appear on their vehicle and shadowy figures show up in their rearview mirror. A fellow traveler warns them not to drive at night, but they ignore the warning. As the terror escalates, they realize they are being targeted by a demonic stalker. The film uses low-budget horror tactics, including jump scares, but the scares feel messy and ineffective, leading to boredom rather than suspense.
"Messy and illogical, Passenger goes in hard with cheap tricks and ineffective jump scares. This is ghost-train cinema - bargain-bin horror for people with terrible attention spans - and it bored me to distraction. Steer clear."
