Marcia Lucas won an Oscar for editing the original 1977 “Star Wars” and helped define the New Hollywood era through essential editing work. She died Wednesday in Rancho Mirage, California, from metastatic cancer, at age 80. Her credits included editing “Return of the Jedi” (1983) and George Lucas-directed films “THX 1138” and “American Graffiti.” She also worked on Martin Scorsese’s 1970s films “Taxi Driver,” “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” and “New York, New York.” She was recognized as an unsung hero of “Star Wars,” and she persuaded George Lucas to have Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) die and become a spirit guide to Mark Hamill.
