Richard Osman's bestseller about a retirement home amateur-detective team sold over ten million copies and inspired a high-profile film adaptation. The production is produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Chris Columbus. The Murder Club is played by Helen Mirren (Elizabeth), Ben Kingsley (Ibrahim), Pierce Brosnan (Ron) and Celia Imrie (Joyce), with supporting roles from Daniel Mays, Jonathan Pryce and David Tennant. The film elevates setting beyond the book, blending Hogwarts-like grandeur, Downton Abbey elegance and classic English countryside. Production designer James Merifield, known for Mary Queen of Scots and several literary adaptations, created the locations and recreated Coopers Chase onscreen.
Clever and cunning as much as it's cosy, Richard Osman's bestseller about a retirement home team of amateur detectives has won hearts and broken records. Its incredible success - 10 million sold, according to The Guardian - means this film version was always going to be a big deal, but the calibre of the team gathered to deliver it is still impressive.
Then there's the four members of the Murder Club: Dame Helen Mirren as the magisterial, even regal, Elizabeth; Sir Ben Kingsley as former psychiatrist Ibrahim; Pierce Brosnan as ex-union leader Ron; and Celia Imrie as baker and onetime nurse Joyce, new to the home and our way into the world. And that's not including the likes of Daniel Mays, Jonathan Pryce and, as no-good property developer Ian Ventham, David Tennant.
