""When you read Mary Shelley's book, it is like a tour of different exotic locations," Frankenstein production designer Tamera Deverell says of the source material for her new Netflix film. "It takes place in Lake Como in Italy. It takes place in Switzerland. It takes place in Edinburgh, where we shot. It takes place in the north. It's a fantastic travelogue.""
"But when it came time to shoot, says Deverell, "we narrowed our focus down mostly to Eastern Europe, without being too specific because [director] Guillermo [del Toro] wanted it to have a fable-like tone, and Edinburgh." Del Toro wanted to primarily shoot real locations, and he and Deverell spent a long time searching for the right places to set the story. The pair embarked on a lengthy trip to look at locations, including Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Ireland, and the United Kingdom."
""We went everywhere," Deverell says. "We settled on coming to the United Kingdom, in particular Scotland, and Guillermo and I spent time going to museums. We got to look at the Hunterian Museum, where the actual Evelyn Tables [human anatomical models] are along with all the equipment of Dr. Frankenstein's era. They opened it especially for us two days before their grand reopening [in May after six years of redevelopment].""
The retelling stages Mary Shelley's Gothic travelogue across diverse European landscapes, concentrating production largely in Eastern Europe and Edinburgh to cultivate a fable-like tone. A commitment to shooting in real locations prompted an extensive location search across Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. Production design incorporated period anatomical artifacts and era equipment, drawing on access to the Hunterian Museum and its Evelyn Tables opened specially for the production. The film opens in the Arctic with an expedition ship and a pursued Victor, and begins streaming on Netflix on November 7.
