North Beach dive bars star in new Francis Ford Coppola-produced SF film
"The movie, presented in one uninterrupted take, follows fictionalized versions of director Ari Gold and his musician brother Ethan Gold as they rehearse on the sidewalk and perform at Vesuvio and Specs', before wandering up the hill for a visit to their father's apartment. Born and raised in San Francisco, where he grew up biking across the Golden Gate Bridge every day with his mother, Ari Gold wanted to show a side of the city that's become pushed out by growth."
"The film was edited in the basement of North Beach's Sentinel Building, home to Francis Ford Coppola's production company, American Zoetrope (Coppola endorsed the film as an executive producer). The team literally took to the neighboring streets to record ambient sounds during post-production. "Every car, every motorcycle, every footstep we were out there recording in the actual streets so that it really feels like the real place," Gold said."
Brother Verses Brother is a 91-minute single-take film that follows fictionalized versions of Ari and Ethan Gold as they traverse San Francisco's North Beach, rehearsing on sidewalks and performing at Vesuvio and Specs' before visiting their father's apartment. Ari Gold grew up in San Francisco, biking across the Golden Gate Bridge, and aimed to capture the neighborhood's bohemian character threatened by growth. The film was edited in the Sentinel Building basement at American Zoetrope, with Coppola endorsing as executive producer. The production recorded ambient street sounds during post-production to ensure authenticity. The brothers perform acoustic songs while seeking gigs throughout the neighborhood.
