"Auf Fritzis Spuren (In Fritzi's Footsteps) tells the story of a 12-year-old girl living in the eastern city of Leipzig and how she experiences life in the east and the events that lead to the fall of the Berlin Wall. It definitely shows that no topic is too difficult for children, said the lead actor, Julian Janssen. It's precisely the difficult topics that should be addressed."
"The story is told by two animated avatars, Julian and Anna, who embark on a journey back in time to the GDR (German Democratic Republic), as protests are building against the regime. During their journey, they encounter individuals who grew up under communism and tell their own accounts of what it was like. Julian and Anna are the two lead characters who take viewers on the journey through history."
Creators intend the series to awaken interest in East German history. Auf Fritzis Spuren follows a 12-year-old girl in Leipzig as she experiences life in the east and witnesses events leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Two animated avatars, Julian and Anna, travel back to the GDR amid growing protests and meet people who grew up under communism, who share personal accounts. The six-part animated series introduces Stasi officers early and aims to address challenging topics for young viewers. The production won an International Emmy in the Kids: Factual & Entertainment category and took 16 years to develop.
