Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie the interview | CBC Arts
"When we were kids, we heard the lore that the Kids in the Hall, a comedy group that we really loved, played at the Rivoli. We were like, 'The Rivoli must be some kind of great big place.' And lo and behold, you move there, and it's just a restaurant with a small concert venue in the back."
"It's the kind of place where it could maybe seem 'mid,' but that's what makes it funny. It does have a lot of history and there's some magic to it."
Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol transformed their cult web series Nirvanna the Band the Show into a feature film that premiered at TIFF's Midnight Madness. The film continues the fictionalized quest of Matt and Jay as they scheme to secure a gig at the Rivoli and are unexpectedly transported back to Toronto in 2008 to attempt to rewrite their history. The movie preserves the series' mix of improvised comedy, documentary-style filmmaking and meta-commentary about making it in entertainment. The Rivoli functions as a meaningful, modest landmark tied to Canadian comedy lore and the filmmakers' personal creative history.
