Kevin Brownlow has spent decades collecting, preserving and restoring fragile silent films, many of which were lost, discarded, or melted for their silver. He received an honorary Oscar in 2010 for these preservation efforts. Brownlow also pursued a directing career with co-director Andrew Mollo, making two acclaimed features: It Happened Here (1964) and Winstanley (1975). Plans for further features faltered after Brownlow and Mollo were dismissed from The Breaking of Bumbo following a casting dispute. Brownlow published major histories of silent cinema and worked as an editor on Tony Richardson's The Charge of the Light Brigade.
