Meet the unsung hero' who helped Walt Disney build Disneyland
"A retired Navy admiral who oversaw the construction of Disneyland and helped Walt Disney build what many regarded as a fool's folly emerges as the unsung hero of a new documentary film about the birth of the Anaheim theme park. The new Disneyland Handcrafted documentary by filmmaker Leslie Iwerks on the one-year blitz to create the first Disney theme park will debut Jan. 22 on YouTube and the Disney+ streaming service."
"The Disneyland Handcrafted documentary relies heavily on footage from the Walt Disney Archives shot by a team of cameramen tasked by Walt Disney to capture the construction of Disneyland before the park opened in 1955. (Courtesy of Disney) Disneyland Handcrafted shows Fowler proudly operating the Mark Twain Riverboat on opening day on July 17, 1955 in footage from the 90-minute live television broadcast on ABC."
Retired Navy Rear Admiral Joe Fowler supervised the construction of Disneyland and managed urgent site work during the push to meet the opening deadline. Project budgets rose from $4.5 million to roughly $11 million between initial planning and December, with final costs uncertain by spring. Extensive archival footage from the Walt Disney Archives documents the one-year construction blitz and shows Fowler operating the Mark Twain Riverboat on opening day, July 17, 1955. The film built from that footage debuts Jan. 22 on YouTube and on the Disney+ streaming service, with a premiere held Jan. 8 at the Walt Disney Studios lot.
