The opening image of Kill Bill shows Uma Thurman battered and bloody while a man's voice asks, "Do you find me sadistic?" In 2018 Thurman revealed she was seriously injured during production after Tarantino persuaded her to attempt a dangerous car stunt on an unstable surface; the car skidded and struck a tree. After the crash, Tarantino sided with producer Harvey Weinstein in denying Thurman access to the footage. Thurman also alleged that Tarantino personally enacted some humiliations portrayed on screen, including spitting tobacco juice in her face and tightening a chain around her neck.
