Judi Dench Says She "Can't See Anymore" Due to Macular Degeneration
"I can't see anymore. I've got that thing,"
"I can see your outline, and I know you so well in your Macbeth scarf."
"I can't recognize anybody now,"
"I can't see the television. Can't see to read."
Dame Judi Dench, 90, has age-related macular degeneration that has progressed to severe sight loss. She can only perceive outlines and cannot recognize people, which causes others to think she is ignoring them. She cannot watch television, read, or participate in stage productions, and she cannot attend events alone. She is concentrating on helping younger generations learn Shakespeare through hands-on classroom work that includes students acting out lines. She has done a few commercials, including one for the UK disaster relief charity ShelterBox, but regular acting has become impossible.
