""We watched the film industry slide away from diversity and play fairly safe in certain ways. Queer stories don't get much airtime. Stories by and about women don't get much airtime. We found out last year that there was a lot of pushing queer stories to the side,""

Olivia Colman expressed fear that mainstream entertainment is too nervous to champion queer films in the current political climate. Filmmaker Sophie Hyde reported that rising anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric made it harder to secure distribution for Jimpa. Jimpa premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival as executive actions in the US reasserted a two-sex policy, reinstated a trans military ban, and limited gender-affirming care for trans youth. The film follows non-binary teen Frances, played by Aud Mason-Hyde, visiting their gay grandfather Jim, played by John Lithgow, with Colman as Frances's mother Hannah. Despite positive Sundance reception and a star cast, Jimpa took a year to reach US cinemas and was ultimately acquired by independent distributor Kino Lorber; a UK release remains unconfirmed.
