The character's actions include aggressive sexual encounters, self-harm, masturbation in the grass while holding a knife, attempts to jump from a moving car, and violent property damage. Robert Pattinson portrays Jackson, the feckless husband; Sissy Spacek plays concerned mother-in-law Pam. Martin Scorsese produced after finding the novel, and Lawrence personally campaigned for Lynne Ramsay to direct because of Ramsay's expressionistic intensity. The film evokes postpartum drama debates and contains provocative nude and sex scenes filmed under complex conditions.
