"As a refresher - with mild "Materialists" spoilers ahead - the song plays over the end credits as Lucy (Johnson) and John (Evans) tie the knot in Manhattan's city hall, in the same room where perfunctory marriages take place every day and also where Song and her husband, Justin Kuritzkes, had their nuptials. Depending on how empty or full the glass is feeling at that point, and whether you believe Lucy and John's relationship can survive their disparate views on money, you can read the film's final scene as hopeful or hopeless."
"Grammy-nominated East Coast-originated indie band Japanese Breakfast started spinning lovelorn tales in 2013. Since then, the Korean-born singer lead singer has lost her mom, married her boyfriend, and wrote a book about it all called "Crying in H Mart." (A film adaptation set up at MGM is currently on pause, and now without the originally attached Will Sharpe as director.) She's also released four albums with Japanese Breakfast, including the band's latest, "For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women)." Speaking to IndieWire, Zauner said that writing "My Baby" proved an upbeat catharsis compared to crafting the somber sounds that make up that 10-track album."
Materialists premiered in summer 2025 and stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal. The film closes with Japanese Breakfast's "My Baby" playing over end credits as Lucy and John marry in Manhattan's city hall, a moment that can read as hopeful or hopeless depending on viewers' take on their financial differences. Michelle Zauner wrote the song and described its upbeat tone as cathartic compared with the somber tracks on the band's latest album. Japanese Breakfast formed in 2013, released four albums, and Zauner has published a memoir, Crying in H Mart.
