It feels like flying!' Sadie Sink and Noah Jupe on child stardom, passion and the heady rush of Romeo and Juliet
"Sadly, until now, Shakespeare wasn't really something I was interested in. He never got on with the plays at school. It was taught in this way that was so boring and intellectual that it just went in one ear and out the other. You didn't find any passion for it."
"I said, Look, one of the things that you could do now that will escape you in five years is Juliet. It's an amazing part, and so few people get to play it, because you have to play it young for it to make any sense."
"I just had this gut feeling. I do this, and I do it right now."
Noah Jupe and Sadie Sink, actors primarily known for screen work, are rehearsing for Robert Icke's production of Romeo and Juliet. Jupe previously played an actor portraying Hamlet in Chloe Zhao's Hamnet adaptation at age 19, though he admits Shakespeare initially bored him in school. Sink, famous for her role as Max in Stranger Things, initially hesitated about performing Shakespeare but was convinced by Icke during their first meeting. Icke emphasized the importance of playing Juliet while young, as the role requires youthful authenticity. This production represents Icke's return to the play, following his acclaimed 2012 production that captured the intensity of teenage romance.
