'Is This Thing On?: Long-time friends Bradley Cooper, Will Arnett on working together, improv on set
"It's just learning to be honest enough with yourself that you can actually tell the other person, which is so much braver,"
"We've all lived that story, you know. Every couple has been through that story."
"The beautiful thing to me at least is that we were partners through the whole thing. I don't know how to shoot anything that I haven't written and been part of the writing process. And for Will, then, to be acting those words, and for us to be talking about the scenes and be able to rewrite them on the day, every day. And because we had a sense of what our purpose is.."
Alex and Tess separate after about 20 years of marriage; Tess remains with their children while Alex rents an apartment in Manhattan. Alex tries open-mic comedy and uses stand-up to cope with post-separation emotions. Both characters confront who they are as individuals, reassess their relationship, and learn to be honest with each other. Will Arnett co-wrote the screenplay with Mark Chappell. Bradley Cooper joined as director, star, and co-producer, collaborating closely with the cast and allowing improvisation and on-set rewrites to shape performances and scenes.
