Liberation, a play by Bess Wohl, transfers to Broadway after a successful off-Broadway run. The production explores a women's liberation group founded in the 1970s in Ohio. More than 50 years later, the daughter of one of the founders seeks to understand her mother's shift to traditional roles. The director, Whitney White, aims for audiences to gain respect for the struggles of past generations. The play received strong critical acclaim, winning awards including the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play, and will have a Broadway run at the James Earl Jones Theatre this fall.
Wohl states, 'The real meaning of Women's Liberation is, to me, about treating all people equally and recognizing the dignity and humanity of every person on earth.'
White hopes audiences will leave Liberation with a greater respect for previous generations, remarking, 'Our mothers and grandmothers had a lot of fight in them and were just as hungry for liberation.'
