Bryce Dessner co-composed the title theme for Train Dreams with Nick Cave and composed the film's chamber-folk score. The film adapts Denis Johnson's novella and follows Robert Grainier through eight decades in northern Idaho, depicting labor, romance, fatherhood and a haunting loss. The film contains minimal dialogue, so the score functions as a central narrative element that underscores work, love, nature and grief. Clint Bentley described the music as the river that moves the film along. The title song features a haunting vocal by Nick Cave. Dessner and Cave earned awards recognition, including Golden Globe and Academy shortlists.
