In the new film 'Hot Milk', Fiona Shaw plays Rose, a cantankerous mother to Sofia, portrayed by Emma Mackey. Set in coastal Spain, Sofia seeks a cure for her mother's mysterious illness from Doctor Gomez. The dynamic between mother and daughter is strained, as Rose's past trauma affects their relationship, causing Sofia to deal with emotional burdens. Additionally, Sofia explores a sapphic romance with seamstress Ingrid, providing her with an escape during their tumultuous journey. Shaw has embraced the complexities of Rose, even embodying physical traits of the character.
"I love Rose. A lot of people don't like Rose, but I like Rose," the 66-year-old says in her sharp yet soft Irish lilt, a light rebuff softened with a laugh.
Her ailment has made her an absolutely torturous mother I'm sure, Shaw admits over Zoom, donning an open chequered shirt and round glasses.
For all the care Sofia is forced to offer, Rose - who is beleaguered by past trauma - snaps and spits, insidiously chipping away at Sofia's barely-formed sense of self.
Shaw spent so long perfecting a twitch Rose has as a by-product of her ailment that she kept on twitching post-filming.
