David Brown built a producing résumé that included The Fallout and The Apprentice while prosecutors allege he siphoned roughly $12 million from business and production partners. Federal charges include 21 counts of wire fraud, transactional money laundering and aggravated identity theft, and he made his first court appearance in South Carolina. Prosecutors say Brown convinced investors to place money into entities like Film Holdings Capital but redirected funds to personal expenses, expensive cars, houses and a surrogate, and to repay prior victims in a Ponzi-like manner. Brown previously acknowledged mistakes but denied defrauding anyone in a 2023 email.
"I had to work really hard to get where I am today," he said. "I had to overcome a lot. I had to fight for my place. ... I'm not some bad guy."
"maintaining his lifestyle and repaying prior victims ... in a Ponzi-like scheme,"
"Brown was indicted Wednesday on 21 counts of wire fraud, transactional money laundering and aggravated identity theft."
