"Alright, let's get this out of the way up front. I am not a fan of the recent live-action adaptation craze. Animation is such a beautiful art form, and I think these live-action remakes are unnecessary. Never have I decided to rewatch a live-action movie over the OG original (101 Dalmatians starring Glenn Close, excluded). That being said, Disney has done a ton of these live-action remakes recently."
"I'm really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favorites. My grandfather comes from Fa'aala, Palauli, in Savai'i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of 'Upolu in Samoa. I'm honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me."
Criticism appears toward the recent live-action adaptation craze, arguing animation is a beautiful art form and live-action remakes are unnecessary. Disney has produced many live-action remakes that have been box-office successes and re-ignite interest in existing IP. Examples include Lilo & Stitch (which made just over $1 billion worldwide), The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Jungle Book. Moana is receiving a live-action adaptation with newcomer Catherine Laga'aia cast as Moana and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson reprising Maui. Catherine Laga'aia cites Samoan heritage and honor in representing Pacific Island peoples. Disney unveiled a teaser trailer showing scenes from the animated movie alongside Catherine in action.
