"When we were shooting Sweet Angel Baby, October 7th happened and it changed everything. I just want to say that my heart continues to be with the people of Palestine who are experiencing this ongoing genocide and thank you to anyone in this industry who's been brave enough to say anything."
"Tailfeathers says her reference to the conflict in Palestine was two sentences long and that 'a choice was made to neutralize and censor my words.' She followed instructions on how to film her speech and is returning her award in response to the editing."
"TFCA president Johanna Schneller said she made the decision to shorten the speech along with those of other recipients to maintain timing of the event, but she is resigning 'in light of this outcome' and expressed being 'saddened' by Tailfeathers returning her award."
Elle-Maija Tailfeathers won the Toronto Film Critics Association Award for outstanding supporting performance in the Canadian film Sweet Angel Baby. She submitted a video acceptance speech that was edited to remove a two-sentence reference expressing support for Palestine and calling the situation a genocide. TFCA president Johanna Schneller stated the cuts were made for timing purposes alongside other recipients' speeches. Tailfeathers rejected this explanation, asserting her words were deliberately censored and neutralized. In response, she returned her award. The incident prompted multiple TFCA members, including critics Adam Nayman, Saffron Maeve, Sarah-Tai Black, and Radheyan Simonpillai, to resign from the organization in protest.
