Cynthia Erivo's journey from nativity play solo to MBE
"an honour I could never have thought would happen"
"I hope it shows that I care deeply about the work and will continue to do so to the best of my abilities,"
"My family's not a musical, acting family. I had no clue how to do this,"
"I had a solo (Silent Night). I loved that I got to sing a song by myself, and that this song made people smile and be happy."
Cynthia Erivo was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to music and drama. She stars in Wicked: For Good, earning a fifth Golden Globe nomination and the possibility of a fourth Oscar nomination. She has already won a Grammy, a daytime Emmy and a Tony, leaving one Oscar win short of EGOT status. Erivo achieved success without family industry connections. She was born to Nigerian immigrant parents and was raised by her mother Edith in Stockwell, south London after her parents split and her father cut contact when she was 16. She first noticed her singing impact with a solo in a nativity play at age five.
