The trend hit home for us this summer when our teenage daughter came home from a trip to New Mexico with a prized cowboy hat. So it makes a lot of sense that the Stanford Theatre would get in on the trend."
"Starting Oct. 3, the Palo Alto movie palace will showcase nearly four dozen classic Westerns including six silent films accompanied by the incomparable Dennis James at the Mighty Wurlitzer over the last 12 weeks of the year. For several decades peaking in the mid-1940s to early-'60s Westerns were the superhero movies of their day. Everybody went to see them, so studios churned more and more out every year until the market was saturated."
Western cultural elements have resurged, reflected in fashion trends and popular shows like Yellowstone. Starting Oct. 3, the Stanford Theatre in Palo Alto will screen nearly four dozen classic Westerns over the final 12 weeks of the year, including six silent films accompanied by Dennis James on the Mighty Wurlitzer. The lineup was curated by David Thomson, who produced a companion booklet available at the theatre. The series features influential works such as Stagecoach, The Searchers, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Johnny Guitar, Shane and High Noon, along with silent masterpieces like The Wind, Greed and The Winning of Barbara Worth.
