""A few years ago I watched Todd Haynes' documentary about The Velvet Underground," Charli XCX wrote in a note posted to X last week. "As many of you know I'm a huge fan of the band and was really taken by the documentary. One thing that stuck with me was how John Cale described a key sonic requirement of The Velvet Underground. That any song had to be both 'elegant and brutal.'""
""Since releasing her album last year, Charli XCX has become involved in several other film projects. She also pulled double duty as host and musical guest on an episode of Saturday Night Live. John Cale shared his last studio album, Poptical Illusion, in 2024 as well. Wuthering Heights hits theaters on Saturday, February 14, 2026. Fennell's adaptation of the famed Emily Brontë novel stars Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff.""
Charli XCX released "House," the first original song shared for Emerald Fennell's upcoming Wuthering Heights film, co-created with Velvet Underground co-founder John Cale and accompanied by a Mitch Ryan-directed video. Charli cited inspiration from Todd Haynes' Velvet Underground documentary and John Cale's notion that songs must be "elegant and brutal," which led her to contact Cale and collaborate specifically on "House." Cale recorded a contribution that moved Charli to tears. Charli has taken on additional film projects and appeared on Saturday Night Live. The film opens February 14, 2026, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, with a score by Anthony Willis.
