Bruce Springsteen married his bandmate Patti Scialfa in the '90s and they had kids shortly after. Here's what to know about their relationship.
""We found ourselves standing in a buzzing crowd at the back bar as I introduced myself to her," he wrote, "and the rest was a long, winding semi-courtship.""
""Through Patti's addition, I wanted to accomplish two things. One, I wanted to improve our musicality," Springsteen wrote in his autobiography. "I wanted dependable, well-sung harmony vocals.""
"She sang the Exciters' hit "Tell Him," and Springsteen said he "fell in love" with her voice."
Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa both grew up in New Jersey and first spoke by phone when he was 21 and she was 17. Scialfa initially answered a newspaper ad for background singers but was told there was too much traveling for a high schooler. The pair met again over the years, and in 1984 Springsteen saw Scialfa perform at the Stone Pony and responded strongly to her voice. Scialfa joined the E Street Band as a backing vocalist, guitarist, and keyboardist and made her onstage debut on June 29, 1984, during the Born in the USA tour, which followed the album's release and commercial success. Springsteen added Scialfa to improve musicality and provide dependable harmony vocals while aligning the band with a maturing audience.
