Bretman described a most disappointing encounter with Vanessa Hudgens at a SugarBear Hair-sponsored Coachella event around 2017–2018, when Hudgens allegedly looked away, hid, and positioned an associate to block interaction as Bretman waved to the SugarBear CEO. Bretman criticized Hudgens for portraying a Latine character despite being Filipino and noted preference for the character Sharpay from High School Musical. The remarks later went viral.
