"Gomis told DW the film includes a tribute to his late father. Part of the production was filmed in the village where his father was born, in the Cacheu region of Guinea-Bissau. "The grave you see in the film, the one the two characters speak to and touch that is my father's grave. The photograph of that man in the film that is my father," he said."
"This is Gomis' second entry in the Berlinale main competition. His acclaimed feature Felicite won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize in 2017. The film also became the first Senegalese submission to reach the Academy Awards' shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film, a landmark achievement for the country's film industry. Political instability in Guinea-Bissau also concerns Gomis. He follows developments in the country closely and commented on its current instability, marked by another coup and now under military control."
Three African co-productions compete for the Berlinale Golden Bear, including the French-Senegalese production DAO. DAO portrays a family across two ceremonies: a wedding in France and a ritual honoring a deceased relative in Guinea-Bissau. Director Alain Gomis moves between the two events to explore migration, family relationships, cultural traditions, and personal memory. The production includes a tribute to Gomis' late father and was partly filmed in the Cacheu region in the village of his father's birth; the grave and photograph in the film are his father's. DAO stars Mike Etienne and D'Johe Kouadio. Guinea-Bissau faces political instability and recent military control, though Gomis expressed hope for future stability.
