Yuvana Beauty fills a long-ignored gap in makeup for aging Black and Brown skin - Caribbean Life
"There was a big gap in the market. A lot of shades didn't complement our golden and olive skin tones. And as we age, our skin changes, but the makeup hasn't. A lot of makeup isn't infused with skincare. Especially for mature skin. I wanted to create something that enhances beauty while caring for it."
"For my parents' sake, I went into nursing. They wanted something secure for me. But that wasn't my passion. Though she respected the profession, she knew her creative instincts pulled her in another direction. The tension between cultural responsibility and personal purpose would define much of her early adulthood, until she ultimately chose to pursue the path that felt authentic to her."
Yuvana Beauty, founded by Guyanese-born entrepreneur Priya Thomas, is a New York-based cosmetics brand targeting women over 40 with products designed for deeper skin tones. The brand launches with 20 long-wear liquid lipsticks formulated with clay and nourishing oils, eight lip glosses, and a brightening lip oil addressing fine lines and lip definition loss. Foundation and skincare collections are forthcoming. Thomas identified a significant market gap where existing shades failed to complement golden and olive skin tones, and makeup formulations didn't adapt to aging skin changes. Her journey involved balancing cultural expectations with personal passion, initially pursuing nursing before discovering her creative calling through exposure to professional makeup artistry at Sony Pictures Entertainment.
