"Our decision to show in Riyadh is not an endorsement of any government or its policies. Rather, we see fashion as a platform for cultural exchange as a way to encourage dialogue, build understanding and create space for diverse voices to be seen and heard."
"What I do feel confident in saying and knowing is that she would feel as if the company does not align with her values or wishes, she said."
Vivienne Westwood's fashion house will headline Riyadh Fashion Week alongside Stella McCartney. The house defended showing in Saudi Arabia as a means to encourage dialogue, build understanding and promote cultural exchange, and stated its presence is not an endorsement of the Saudi regime. The Vivienne Foundation will release a T-shirt range with proceeds partly supporting LGBTQ+ charities and other causes. Cora Corre, Westwood's granddaughter and foundation co-founder, said she was unaware the T-shirt release coincided with the Riyadh show and said the company does not align with the late designer's values or wishes. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International highlighted Saudi Arabia's poor human rights record and risks to LGBTQ+ people. The timing follows broader criticism of western performers appearing in Saudi Arabia.
