Sneakers Become Art With a Traditional Japanese Sewing Skill
"The one-of-a-kind footwear can take as long as two weeks to create, and cost 200,000 yen, or $1,332, a pair."
"Since Sashiko Gals introduced its work in early 2024, the group has completed 100 pairs of sneakers, sold through stores in Tokyo that stock Kuon."
In the wake of the 2011 tsunami in Japan, Sashiko Gals emerged as a project to assist victims, led by Moonshot, a design-focused company tackling social issues. Named after a traditional stitching technique, the initiative employs 15 workers to upcycle secondhand sneakers into bespoke footwear that can take two weeks to complete and costs approximately $1,332 a pair. Since its launch in early 2024, Sashiko Gals has produced 100 pairs of unique sneakers, gaining a waitlist so long that they now only accept new orders twice yearly. The project blends craftsmanship and community support, becoming a form of wearable art.
